The Mediterranean Odyssey: is the new EU bill going to be approved?

What happened in the past couple years in the Mediterranean is not going to easily end. Thousands of people, trying to seek for a better life, a better chance, are getting on those boats, trying to cross what now can be called the Sea of Death.

In the past month, another tragedy stained those water with blood, blood of human beings who have been exploited, mistreated and robbed by those who are seen as life saviours by mistake. Those smugglers who have nothing to lose, who take people from the poorest parts of Africa, ask them all the money they earned in their lifetime for the journey of fortune, which might turn into a nightmare once they start sailing. Whatever they will do to us, they are nothing: Romanian exploitation in Sicily

Sicily: the port of entry to continental Europe from the Mediterranean. What many people do not know is what happens in the Sicilian countryside, where thousands of migrants work in agriculture, in particular in the fruit and vegetables industry. Part of what you find in the supermarkets and grocery stores might be produced in this areas, especially because of the favorable climate all year round.

Here many people, principally women, come from the poorest areas of Eastern Europe to work in the greenhouses of southern Sicily, to produce out of season groceries that will then be sold all around the country. The majority of these women are young mothers, coming from Romania with their young kids and sometimes with their partners to find a better opportunity, some more money to support the family. The massive immigration issue is still well settled in the Mediterranean. The Media keeps speaking about the immigration emergency in Italy, the EU does not act on these matters while it keeps the “big ones” of the Union well far from the problem and regions of Italy are the only ones who have to deal with the non-stopping flow of migrants crossing the Mediterranean every week from Northern African coasts.  Continue reading

The Italian immigration problem. Is there a way to solve it?

Everyone knows what is happening in the Mediterranean coast of Italy. Many boats are bringing thousands of refugees, who escape from the war in Syria and the previous tense situations in northern Africa and the Middle East. But locals are not happy with this situation. Italy is facing a rough period for what concerns economy and employment, and racism is starting to rise again towards those people who come and seek for help in another reality.
